TAMASHA LA ZANZIBAR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL KUANZA KUTIMUA VUMBI 29th JUNE


The 16th Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) will bring you the 16th edition of Festival of Dhow is scheduled to start from June 29 to July 7. We welcome you to the festival, to share with us in these nine days of film and entertainment, with the belief that this rare opportunity will be yet another chance to grow and promote this Festival of Dhow Culture. The intention is to see how the festival is able to bring change, because as you may be aware ZIFF has been instrumental in creating employment, developing cultural art talents and promoting film-making in Tanzania.

ZIFF Films 2013:
We are happy to announce the advent of more than 35 film directors with films in the competition who have confirmed their presence at this Festival of Dhow Culture. Over 250 Films were submitted this year and only 80 films were selected to contest the numerous awards offered at the festival.  The Awards includes 4 international juries in attendance. The ZIFF Jury awards which award Golden Dhow to the Best Feature Film, SIGNIS Award (World Catholic Association for Communication), the Sembene Award, Jury will award the Ousmane Sembene Films for Development Award, Verona Award which is awarded to the Best East African Feature Film and also ZUKU seeks to reward the best film created by African Directors, in African Location and with African Actors and Actresses. The award rewards creativity in telling African stories and exceptional new talent in film directing and acting in Africa
ZIFF 2013 Entertainment line-up
The musical line-up includes Mrisho Mpoto and Mjomba Band, Skylight Band, Linah, Fid Q, Barnaba, Jhikoman, Baby J, Synerg, Swahili vibes, Safi theatre, Tongwa Assembly, Mkubwa na Wanawe (Said Fela), Shiwe from Comoro and others
CHILDREN PANORAMA
Unlike previous years, the Children Panorama 2013 will involve children from the three East African countries, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. The Children Film Panorama will provide an opportunity for films specifically made for children and some made by children to be shown during the festival. Through the showing of these films about 1500 Primary and Secondary schools students in Zanzibar will be reached. There will also be a special Workshop on Animation. Three international trainers from Egypt, Australia and Tanzania will collaborate to train 20 students in 3 different stop motion animation skills. The workshop is being sponsored by the Zanzibar Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and ZIFF.
WOMEN PANORAMA
In collaboration with the New Jersey College from the US, ZIFF will conduct a Workshop on women and safe motherhood. Women will be trained in the use of media to communicate amongst community members about maternal health. The workshop will be undertaken in Nungwi. There will be a Workshop on sexual harassment.
VILLAGE PANORAMA
This year’s Village Panorama will take place in 10 villages in Unguja and 3 Villages in Pemba. As usual various health related workshops will be conducted and each evening Swahili films will be shown at the various venues in the villages.
EXHIBITION - "FILM MARKET"
There will be an exhibition of different presentations of works of art and creative crafts, made in Tanzania, during the festival. These stalls will provide an opportunity for people to buy and sell handicrafts and forming business networks. In order to encourage film business in East Africa, there will be a special pavilion where ZUKU will buy films from local producers and filmmakers.
DHOW RACE ON 30 JUNE
The traditional ZIFF Dhow race will have 10 groups participating in the competition where the winner will receive a cash prize of Tshs 200,000. Second and Third Place will win 150,000 and 100,000 respectively. 7 companies have already sponsored dhows that will display their logos for branding purposes
Bongo Movie Symposium - June 28 to June 30
There will be a special "Bongo Movie Symposium" conducted by Murdoch University on 3rd-4th July. Tanzanian and overseas-based researchers will meet to discuss chapters for a forthcoming book on Bongo movies to be edited by Prof Martin Mhando.
FASHION SHOW - June 29
In the field of fashion the 16th ZIFF will have a special display of Fashion Designs by Mustafa Hassanali, Farouque Abdella and Javed Jafferji on 29 June. This is part of the Swahili Fashion Week which coincides with ZIFF 2013.
FESTIVAL OF FESTIVALS - June 30 to July 6
This program is an opportunity for trade and culture promotion in during the festival. Festivals from Iran, Australia, ZUKU, South Africa and TANAPA will be presented every day from 2pm to 5pm at Maru Maru Hotel.
SWAHILI DAY - July 5
As usual the last Friday of ZIFF is the Swahili and Family day at ZIFF. 14 Bongo movies will be shown all day in all the film viewing venues across the island. This special day has been set aside to promote Tanzanian films, further showing ZIFF’s commitment to honouring the work of Tanzania film artists.
AWARDS NIGHT - July 6
• Awards will be given to various winners from the 70 films competing the 16th ZIFF
